The strength of the PPI
The PPI is a more complete picture of a persons behavioral preferences. The PPI does this by following much of the previous work of DISC assessment tools but take it a step further with the introduction of a dimension entitled “Motivational Energy” the fifth scale. In addition to this difference (which I will go into in more detail) there is the issue of responding. As you read earlier the typical DISC forces you to make most/least choices of a set of adjectives. The PPI does not do that. Each adjective is assigned points and the respondent must rank them in order of preference thus taking into account the value of each adjective rather than dismissing half of them outright. In total there are 30 sets of adjectives.
The PPI is made up of five scales. Scales one through four basically correspond with the DISC quadrants. The fifth scale sets the PPI apart from DISC. Scales I, II, III and IV can be regarded as primary factors. Factor analysis has demonstrated that these items are statistically related to and measure the primary DISC factors in a highly reliable and accurate manner.
Factor analysis also identified a fifth factor, consisting of 29 Profiles Performance Indicator items. A review of these 29 items suggests that this fifth factor (Scale V) should be entitled “Motivational Energy” (ME). This factor is regarded as a second-order factor. Psychologically, a second-order factor is a broader dimension of personality. Therefore, a more complete description and understanding of any profile could be obtained by knowing the ME Scale score and the I, II, III and IV Scale scores.
The PPI report is another distinguishing element. Instead of showing 3 graphs that could be easily misunderstood or viewed selectively, thus increasing the subjectivity, it displays all of the results in one graph. Along with the graph is a very clear description of what the results mean.
Two Reports – Manager & Individual
Each report is broken into several parts:
• Summary of Primary Behavioral Tendencies – This compares your results to 5 critical job-related requirements; Productivity, Quality of Work, Initiative, Teamwork & Problem Solving
• Suggestions for Increased Effectiveness – This relates to some behavioral tendencies that you might want to modify or improve.
• Response to Job-related Stress, Frustration and/or Conflict – This relates typical behavior as a response to stress frustration and/or conflict
• Motivational Energy – Motivational Energy (ME) reflects the intensity that you show as you approach most situations.
The preceding points are included in the ‘individual report’. In addition to the above, the ‘manager report’ includes an additional section.
• Work Motivation – This section of the report describes the different types of incentives, rewards and conditions that are most compatible with the employees’ behavioral tendencies and motivational style.
Both the DISC and the PPI can be completed on-line/e-copy or by paper and pencil. They each take approximately 20 minutes to complete and can be debriefed individually or in a group.
